With 80% of marine debris coming from land based sources, local councils can help
promote the key anti-litter messages by creating local community displays or
communications opportunities to remind residents and visitors that litter dropped on the street can reach the ocean and rivers through run-off from storm water drains.
Themed posters can be downloaded from our Creative Resources section for you to use, whilst downloading our template media release to localise and distribute to your local media is a good way of helping spread the anti-litter message. |

| Keep Australia Beautiful Week is also a good time to consider how your council or shire rubbish and recycling services and infrastructure are faring. |
| |
| Litter reduction for local councils - how does your council or shire fare? |
- Council installing public place bins with secure tops or lids to help prevent scattered ground litter resulting from wind, scavenging birds, possums and other animals.
- Is the frequency of public bin collections sufficient or are bins often overflowing?
- How many Council storm water drains to rivers or coastal regions have litter nets or traps to capture litter and prevent it from entering waterways. And how often are these serviced?
- How many Council storm water drains are of a design to prevent containers from entering into drain systems?
- How often to council review public place bin design, numbers and frequency or servicing?
- Are you waste contractors regularly leaving litter from knocked over bins or fly-away rubbish on the ground when doing their collections? Communication with your supplier should emphasise the need for drivers to be aware of any litter issues they are leaving behind.
