North West Bay Scout Group
North West Bay Scout Group (NWBSG) was successful in obtaining a grant from Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB) to conduct a recycling program at the annual Scout and Guide Regatta held at Snug Beach 11^th – 14th March 2011.

Bins were labeled clearly on lids and sides and placed around the venue in pairs – a recycling bin (yellow lid) next to a rubbish bin (green lid). Large recycling banners were erected on the fence at the entrance to the oval and above the recycling marquee just inside this entrance. The marquee housed educational information – posters, leaflets, stickers and examples of compostable products. An educational officer was present much of the time to answer questions and also quiz people about recycling. Small prizes were handed out as encouragement.. Can crushers were situated in 3 locations – the regatta lounge/café, the NWBSG boat shed and in front of the educational marquee. Bins under these were labeled appropriately and signs were erected above them.

The recycling program has created a good baseline for recycling at future regattas. Despite the overall result being somewhat disappointing, we can aim to improve each year with a few changes. Further education of all participants (in newsletters and in group activities)and more advertising before and during (public address announcements) the regatta, plus the addition of more can crushers and bins for each group will be a good start.
