Kalkarindji - Victoria Daly Shire Council
Shire staff at Kalkarindji undertook a visual study of the volumes of recyclable waste from the Social Club taken to landfill. The Shire and Social Club through education and public awareness encouraged Social Club staff and patrons to consider recycling by following the newly desired waste disposal practices and systems in place. Resource recovery bins (bulk bag in frames) were set up behind shop at the Social Club. Once filled with aluminium cans (no glass policy) filled bags were stored within intermediate storage areas awaiting transportation back to the major hubs.
The community recycling project (containers collected from within the Social club) was successful in diverting recyclable beverage containers away from landfill back into the recycling loop. All patrons participated and demonstrated the positive desire to adhere to the disposal behavior practices of placing beverage containers within the recycle bins provided.
Social Club waste sent to land-fill decreased between 70 and 90%. This decrease would increase the life expectancy of the Landfill site considerably, reducing Shire expenses. All Social Club staff & patrons will continue to promote this practice in Kalkarindji.
