2010 Grant Recipients

Albury City Council
The Lavington Sports Oval is a major sporting facility for Albury. The ground has a capacity of 20,000 people, with a majority of the waste generated suitable for recycling ie. plastic containers, aluminium cans & cardboard, no recycling has been occurring prior to this initiative been implemented.
The new infrastructure was implemented in September 2010 which consisted of twenty new 240 litre bins with waste and recycling hi tops.
230 tonnes of waste is collected annually from the facility. Initial audits showed that 68% of the waste generated was suitable for recycling. 158 lifts have occurred since September 2010 until January 2011 at other Council held events using the new infrastructure, equaling 37,920 litres. Based on 11 kilograms of recycling on average per lift this would mean that 65.66 tonnes of recycling has been diverted from landfill.

Bathurst Regional Council
Bathurst Regional Council did not previously have public place recycling facilities in place.
It was proposed that one of the beverage recycling bins would be located in the vicinity in the Bathurst Visitor Information Centre (BVIC). The second and third bins would be located in two key locations at Charles Sturt University. The locations within the university are in front of the library and the media learning area – these are high traffic sites which also offer easy to access for the recycling contractor.

PCYC Lake Illawarra
PCYC Lake Illawarra did not recycle any items prior to this grant with all rubbish entering one big combined skip bin. This project involved allocating Recycling signage and bins for recycling in the centre and the collection of the recyclable materials to raise money for our centre. The project has been a great success with many people commenting on how much better the facility looks and how organised it is. They are all using the allocated bins and it did not take long at all to change their rubbish disposal habits.

Lockhart Tidy Towns Committee
The Keep Australia grant, funded by the Coca-Cola Foundation, enabled the Lockhart Tidy Towns Committee for the Lockhart Lions Club to purchase site equipment and a second-hand forklift. After many years of faithful service, Lockhart Lions Club’s forklift became tired and needed to be replaced with a new second-hand forklift. The new second-hand forklift has allowed the Lockhart Lions Club to take advantage of new technology in load movement. Unloading and loading is now much more efficient, which saves time and minimizes manual handling.
Since April last year, the Lockhart Lions Club has collected 100 tonnes of paper and cardboard; 2700 kilos of glass per month; 200 kilos plastic bottles per month; plastic wrap 348 kilos a month; aluminum cans 89 kilos per month.

Toronto Tidy Towns Inc
The funding was used to purchase 2 “Gossi Park”enclosed recycling bins at Regatta Walk Park on the Toronto foreshore.  6 additional recycle only bins and their installation at various locations in the Toronto CBD and 2 Veolia 660ltr recycle bins for use by local businesses including restaurants, cafes and real estate agents (both bins were full after the first week’s use).
A brief survey prior to the installation of the Veolia 660ltr bins indicated 54 x 2 litre milk containers, 5 x 3 litre milk containers, 91 x soft drink bottles/cans, 28 x alcohol bottles and 20 x beer bottles concluded that these figures were ending up in landfill PER DAY!
